Monster Painting Guide
A few simple supplies and thin coats of paint are all you need to bring your child’s monster to life.
Best Brushes
Choose soft synthetic brushes: a medium flat brush for larger areas, a small round brush for details, and a fine liner for eyes and outlines.
Before Painting
Wipe the print with a dry, soft cloth. For brighter colors and smoother coverage, apply a thin coat of water-based acrylic primer first.
Finish & Protect
Apply two or three thin coats instead of one thick coat, letting each coat dry fully. Finish with a water-based clear acrylic sealer if desired.
Step-by-Step: Painting Your Monster

Prep Your Workspace
Lay down newspaper or a craft mat. Have a cup of water, paper towels, and your brushes ready. Make sure your monster is clean — a quick wipe with a dry cloth removes any dust from printing.

Prime (Optional)
For the most vibrant colors, brush on a thin, even coat of white acrylic primer. Let it dry for 30 minutes. This step is optional but makes bright colors pop against the grey PLA.

Base Colors
Start with the largest areas first. Use your medium flat brush to apply the base color for the body. Don't worry about perfection — thin, even coats look better than one thick one.

Add Details
Once the base is dry (about 15 minutes), switch to your small round brush for eyes, mouths, horns, and other features. A fine liner brush is perfect for pupils, teeth, and tiny scales.

Layer & Blend
Add a second thin coat to any area that needs more coverage. For shading, dab a slightly darker color around the edges and blend with a damp brush while the paint is still wet.

Seal & Protect
After everything is fully dry (wait 24 hours), apply a water-based clear sealer with a soft brush. This protects the paint from scratches and gives your monster a finished, professional look.
Pro Tips from the Workshop
- • Less is more. Two thin coats always beat one thick coat — it prevents drips and brush marks.
- • Keep a damp paper towel handy to wipe mistakes before they dry. Acrylic paint is forgiving in the first minute.
- • Let your child lead. The monster doesn't have to match the drawing — it's their creation now.
- • Paint eyes last. They're the soul of the monster, and a steady hand is easier once the rest is dry.
- • Don't forget the back! Kids love flipping their monster over to find colors on every side.
